ActronAir Not Cooling? The Common Causes
When an ActronAir system runs but doesn’t cool, it’s frustrating — especially in summer. The good news is that the cause is often something simple, and even when it isn’t, knowing the likely culprits helps you describe the problem accurately and get it fixed faster. Here are the common causes, roughly from simplest to most involved. A couple you can safely check yourself; the rest are for a licensed technician.
Things you can safely check first
-
Settings — confirm the system is in Cool mode, the set temperature is below room temperature, and any timer or schedule isn’t holding it off.
-
The filter — a blocked return-air filter is one of the most common causes of weak airflow and poor cooling. Check and clean (or replace) it.
-
The outdoor unit — make sure it isn’t blocked by leaves, debris, or anything stacked against it, and that the fan is running.
-
Power — check the system hasn’t tripped a breaker at the switchboard.
If cooling doesn’t return after these, the cause is likely internal — and that’s where a technician comes in.
Common internal causes (for a licensed technician)
-
A failed capacitor — a common, inexpensive failure that can stop the compressor or fan motor starting, so the system runs without cooling.
-
A worn contactor — the switch that powers the compressor; worn contacts can stop it energising.
-
A fan-motor fault — indoor or outdoor; poor airflow across either coil kills cooling performance.
-
Low refrigerant — usually from a leak. Refrigerant work is ARC-licensed; topping up without finding the leak isn’t a fix.
-
A compressor fault — the heart of the system; less common, but it stops cooling entirely.
-
A control-board or sensor fault — a faulty board, or a temperature sensor reading incorrectly, can stop the system calling for cooling.
Many of these imitate each other, which is exactly why diagnosis matters — the cheapest possible fix (say, a capacitor) and the most expensive (a compressor) can look identical from the lounge room.
If your system is showing a fault code
Most ActronAir systems will display an error code at the wall controller when something’s wrong. If yours is, note it down — it’s the fastest route to a diagnosis. See our guide to ActronAir fault codes. ActronAir also advises that if a fault persists, you turn the unit off and contact ActronAir Service on 1800 119 229 with your model number.
