ActronAir Zoning: A Practical Guide

Genuine ActronAir zone damper and module — Actron Spare Parts.

Zoning lets you heat or cool only the rooms you’re using — closing off the bedrooms during the day, or the living areas overnight — which improves comfort and cuts running costs. It works by opening and closing dampers in the ductwork to send air where it’s wanted. This guide explains the parts that make up an ActronAir zoning system, and the one rule that matters most when replacing any of them: they’re specific to your control platform.

How ActronAir Zoning Works

A zoning system is several matched parts working together:

  • Zone dampers (barrels) — motorised flaps in the ducts that open and close each zone, in sizes from around 8″ to 16″.

  • Zone motors — the actuators that drive the dampers open and closed (for example 24V integrated barrel motors).

  • Zone modules — the boards that switch the zones; on/off modules (4-zone and 8-zone) and VAV modules that modulate airflow for finer control (used on Ultima and Platinum QUE systems).

  • Zone controllers and sensors — the in-room controls and sensors that set and read each zone’s temperature.

  • Zone cabling — the data cabling that links it together, which is platform-specific.

VAV vs On/Off Zoning

Two broad approaches: simple on/off zoning opens or closes each zone fully, while VAV (variable air volume) zoning modulates the dampers part-way to fine-tune the airflow and temperature in each zone. ActronAir’s Ultima and Platinum QUE systems use VAV modules; many other systems use on/off. The parts aren’t interchangeable between the two.

The Rule That Matters: Platform-Specific Parts

Zoning parts are matched to your control platform — NEO, QUE, M-Series, Ultima — and they are not interchangeable, right down to the zone cabling (for example QUE and Ultima use specific cables). This is one of the easiest areas to order the wrong part. The same caution we apply to controllers applies here; see our ActronAir Controllers guide for how to identify your platform.

Getting the Right Genuine Zoning Part

Because zoning parts are platform-specific and come in different sizes and types (damper, motor, module, on/off vs VAV), don’t match them by guesswork — and our store search doesn’t support model numbers. Tell us your system’s model and control platform (or send a photo of the existing part), and we’ll confirm the right genuine part. Call 1300 904 554 or email actron@nationalacparts.com.au.
