ActronAir Air Filters: Ducted vs Split, Explained

AirClean V-pleat disposable filter.

A clean filter is the most important bit of air conditioner maintenance there is. It protects the air you breathe and keeps the system breathing freely, which protects performance and the parts behind it. But “ActronAir filters” actually covers two different things — the filter for a ducted system and the filter for a wall-split — and they work quite differently. This guide explains both, what we recommend and why, and how to order the right one.

Ducted Systems: A Generic Filter, Not a Branded One

Here’s the honest part many suppliers won’t spell out: for a ducted system, the return-air filter is a generic item — no manufacturer makes a “branded” ducted filter, ActronAir included. The filter sits in your return-air grille, and the right size and type are determined by that grille and your duct design, not by the brand of your air conditioner. So a ducted filter is never “genuine ActronAir”; it’s a correctly-sized, correctly-rated filter for your return-air opening.

That leaves a real choice about quality — and it’s where our recommendation comes in.

What We Recommend for Ducted Systems — and Why

For ducted systems we recommend, and supply, the AirClean V-pleat disposable filter. We don’t recommend it because it’s the cheapest — it isn’t. You can buy cheaper flat-panel filters, but in our experience they don’t deliver the protection or the indoor air quality that the AirClean filter does. We recommend it because of what it actually does:

  • Its unique ‘V’-pleat design has over 2.5 times the surface area of a traditional flat panel filter, and is designed to trap pollutants over ten times smaller than a panel filter can.

  • It filters the small pollutants you can’t see — pollen, virus carriers, lint, mould spores and dust mites — the kind that trigger allergies, asthma and hay fever.

  • It is approved under the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program and carries the blue butterfly symbol, identifying it as potentially beneficial for people affected by asthma and allergies.

  • By keeping the indoor coil cleaner, it helps the system run more efficiently, extends the life of the unit, and reduces energy consumption.

  • It is Australian designed and made, and disposable — a clean filter every time, rather than a washed one that never fully recovers.

A note on the name: “G4” isn’t the product — it’s the filter’s efficiency classification (rated G4 to EN779:2012 and AS1324.2). The product is the AirClean V-pleat disposable filter, which carries that G4 rating.

How to Order a Ducted Filter: Measure First

Because AirClean filters are made to suit your grille, they aren’t a universal size — so getting the measurement right is the most important step. We sell them as a custom item: you give us the size, we place the order, and the filter is made and shipped to you.

Measure your existing filter outside edge to outside edge to get the size that will fit correctly — measuring the opening or the old filter incorrectly is the most common ordering mistake. There’s a simple measuring guide on the filter product page to walk you through it. Once you have your measurement, enter it when you order, or send it to us and we’ll take care of the rest. Call 1300 904 554 or email actron@nationalacparts.com.au.

Two practical points worth knowing. Because these filters are custom-made and shipped directly from the manufacturer, they’re not held in our warehouse and can’t be collected — and our same-day dispatch doesn’t apply to them. And because they’re made to your size, it’s important to measure carefully: a custom filter can be returned if what we supplied differs from your order, so the right measurement up front saves time for everyone.

Wall-Split Systems: These Filters ARE Genuine ActronAir

Wall-split systems are different. The filter clips into the indoor head and is a genuine ActronAir part, made to fit that specific model. For these, you do want the genuine, model-matched filter — it fits correctly and maintains the airflow the unit was designed around. We stock genuine ActronAir wall-split filters and treat them like any other genuine ActronAir spare part: same-day dispatch on stocked items ordered before 1:00 PM AEST, and where we don’t hold one, we can supply it through the ActronAir network. To get the right one, just give us your model number.

Why a Clean Filter Matters

A blocked filter is behind a surprising number of “faults”: weak cooling, a frozen indoor coil, water leaking on thaw, and higher running costs as the system works harder to pull air through. Replacing or cleaning the filter on schedule is the cheapest preventive maintenance there is — and it protects the expensive parts downstream. As a rough guide, a ducted disposable filter is typically changed around every 12 months in a home, and every 3–6 months in an office, commercial or dusty setting. (If you’re chasing a fault rather than doing maintenance, our ActronAir not cooling and ActronAir leaking water guides may help.)
